First Pinhole

According to Rick Bebout: "...it's what's left of the Church of St. George the Martyr (built in 1844), after a fire in 1955. It had a spire that survived, making the whole thing twice as tall, but it was taken down, thought to be unsafe (though apparently it wasn't). Too bad, that.

"The architect was Henry Bower Lane. Born 1787, London, England; came to Toronto in 1840; returned to England in 1847. In between (busy boy, our Henry) he did: 1843: Little Trinity Church, 425 King St. E.; 1844: Toronto City Hall, Front St. (now incorporated into the St. Lawrence Market); 1844: Church of St. George the Martyr; 1844: additions to Osgoode Hall, Queen St. (possibly; records of the time unclear...); 1846: Church of the Holy Trinity, Trinity Square.

There's a street named for him in the St. Lawrence Village project: Henry Lane Terrace. (With the same sort of apparent redundancy we get in Avenue Road!)"
