my land
These photos are shot on the Leslie Street Spit, an urban conservation area. The landfill site in Lake Ontario has been reclaimed by nature; flora and fauna abound. The images, including extreme close-ups of the earth, are taken with a low resolution digital camera, and then printed 16” x 20”. The texture of the digital compression becomes painterly. The colour is lush and often the items photographed are unrecognizable, glowing and surreal. Here is nature, growing on top of the detritus of urban culture. Still beautiful, vital and essential. A part of us.
Most Sundays, winter or
summer, I spend a few hours on the Spit. As my refuge from the city, I decided
to start thinking of it as "my land".
